BIOS MATER has reached an exciting milestone by producing its first bio-based material samples, marking the transition from project planning and design to tangible product development.
The first samples represent the outer layer of a bio-based sandwich panel being developed for raised floor system applications. They are produced by combining bio-based ingredients, including reinforcing fibres to provide mechanical strength, fillers to improve stability, and a bio-based resin to bind the components into a robust composite material.
These initial samples will now undergo a series of mechanical performance tests to evaluate their properties and provide valuable data for the next stages of development. The results will help partners optimise the material formulation and further enhance its performance before progressing towards larger-scale prototypes.
This achievement represents an important step within BIOS MATER’s mission to develop innovative, high-performance construction materials from renewable and bio-based resources. By combining sustainability with functionality, the project aims to deliver construction products that support the transition towards a more circular and climate-friendly built environment.
The sandwich panel forms part of one of the project’s four production routes, which are developing advanced bio-based solutions for flooring, wall systems, façade cladding, and interior applications. As research and testing continue, BIOS MATER will progressively refine these materials to ensure they meet the demanding performance, durability, and sustainability requirements of the construction sector.
While these are only the first samples, they demonstrate that BIOS MATER’s concepts are becoming reality. The consortium looks forward to sharing further developments as the materials evolve from laboratory prototypes into innovative building products ready for demonstration and validation.
