The BIOS MATER project is committed to transforming the construction sector through innovative, bio-based solutions that are safe, circular, and low-carbon. By combining cutting-edge research, industry expertise, and policy insights, the project aims to develop high-performance building materials that minimize environmental impact while meeting the highest standards of safety and durability.
With 22 partners across 10 European countries, BIOS MATER brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of researchers, companies, and stakeholders. The project focuses on five key objectives:
- Advance Bio-Based Construction – Develop and demonstrate innovative construction materials made from natural and waste biomass, reducing reliance on fossil-based plastics.
- Promote Safe & Circular Design – Apply Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) and circular economy principles to ensure high performance, safety, and minimal environmental impact.
- Enable Real-World Use – Showcase materials in practice through a dedicated demonstration park (DEMOpark), supporting market uptake and industry confidence.
- Support Regional Innovation – Empower local ecosystems and SMEs to drive independent innovation in bio-based construction across Europe.
- Inform Policy and the Public – Provide clear evidence and tools to support policy decisions and raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable biomaterials.
Through these objectives, BIOS MATER seeks to foster a construction ecosystem that is environmentally responsible, economically viable, and socially beneficial. By aligning scientific innovation with practical application, the project aspires to make a measurable impact on the European construction industry and advance the transition toward a truly sustainable built environment.
